Our
History

Kalkara Haulage

Get to Know Us

As far as he can remember, Mr Joseph Delceppo, founder of Kalkara Boatyard, has always loved building boats and at age 15, he joined the merchant navy as a deck boy after he had been plying in Grand Harbour ferrying sailors with his father’s ‘Dghajsa’ when the father could not make it. As a deck boy in the merchant navy, Joseph would build models of boats during his free time, starting with modest 12-inch models and progressing to 15-foot models, depending on the availability of space and facilities. His talent for carpentry was recognised, and at age 24, he was promoted to ship’s carpenter. It was at the age of 28 that Joseph made a decision that would change his life, as he decided to ‘go it alone’. He set up his own boat-building yard in a shed in Kalkara, where, for lack of a name, he put up a sign stating 'Kalkara Boat Yard'.

Our Location

Kalkara Creek is very picturesque and is situated close to the historical cities of Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa. The yard itself is not far from shops, bars, restaurants, pharmacies, a clinic, banks and a post office. Public transport is available to and from the yard at 30 minute intervals between 0600 and 23.00 hrs. A Taxi service is also available. The yard itself offers facilities for local and overseas calls, fax and e-mail during working hours. Services such as electricity supply, both 240V and 380 V, and water are available from state of the art equipment that monitors the cost against use. Clients can ‘buy’ the services and are given an electronic tag for their own control.
